You may have noticed that ever since you have updated your device to iOS 16, there will be a frequent prompt asking to allow a paste from one app to another each time you copy and paste text or content. It appears to be a security feature meant to protect sensitive clipboard data from apps that try to access it without permission. MacRumors reports that Apple has confirmed this is not what the company intended with its latest, stricter clipboard privacy measures.
Earlier this week, Ron Huang, a senior manager at Apple, responded to a complaint about frequent prompts from a frustrated user. The complaint was originally emailed to CEO Tim Cook and software chief Craig Federighi. “This is absolutely not expected behavior, and we will get to the bottom of it,” said Huang.
This frequent copy and paste prompt wasn’t detected before iOS 16 was launched.
There is no doubt that Huang knows a thing or two about this feature, as he is listed among the inventors of it on Apple’s patent application. It sounds like the “allow” dialog should appear when apps try to access pasteboard data without direct user interaction. In its current state, the bug conflicts with unmistakable user intent and the system’s core paste command.
A 16.0.1 update was released for the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro to address activation issues that were present in iOS 16. The most recent version of iOS 16 available for most eligible devices is 16.0. Developers and public beta testers are currently testing iOS 16.1, but the final version will not be available for several weeks.
