It has been reported by Insider Gaming that the updated PlayStation 5 could include a removable disc drive that could be connected via USB-C to play games.
Currently, the PS5 is available in two versions: one with a built-in disc drive and one that is a “Digital Edition” that cannot read any discs. To play games, you’ll have to download them directly to its solid-state drive (SSD). The drive is said to be sold separately from the console, making it much easier to fix your console if it stops reading discs.
Since its launch in November 2020, The PlayStation 5’s internals have changed considerably. Earlier this year, the console got a revamped motherboard and cooling system. In 2021, a revamped version started rolling out with a lighter heatsink. The console has remained the same on the outside despite all those changes.

As of now, it’s too early to tell how the addition of an external disc drive would affect the PS5’s polarizing aesthetic – in theory, the next version could simply look like the current PS5 digital edition with an extra USB-C port. It was further reported that the revision will “completely replace” the chassis currently on sale but will feature “almost identical hardware.”
There’s going to be a delay before this option becomes available; however that’s to be expected given that Sony is also working on another major hardware launch right now; the PlayStation VR2, a next-generation virtual reality headset meant to pair with the PS5. The release date and price for the PSVR2 have not been announced.
